When there are more than 2 lanes in a single direction, that means that the number of pbutting lanes has increased. IMO, one should drive in the right most lane when not pbutting. If one needs to pbutt traffic in the right lane, or "merging" traffic that will soon be in the right lane, then you can use the middle lane. If there are slower vehicles in the middle lane, then you can use the left most lane to pbutt.
In all cases, you must yield to faster vehicles behind you before pbutting.
Q about "pbutt left, drive right" 4052Here, in the Atlanta area, there's another good reason to stay out of the rightmost lane. If you stay there for more 2-5 miles, the right lane will turn into...
When traffic is heavy enough, then you'll more or less be constantly pbutting traffic to your right if you're in the middle or left lanes. If you're not, and no one is keeping you from going faster, then you should either speed up or move right to allow faster traffic to pbutt.
Which supports what I stated above. There's no reason to not drive in the right most lane unless you're actually pbutting other vehicles. Some people use the excuse of the potential of encountering merging traffic as a reason not to drive in the right most lane. As I see it, merging traffic can be spotted well ahead of time (allowing you enough time to plan a lane change if necessary to pbutt them).
No problem. Have fun reading :)
