Quote: If very few cars could exceed 70mph then what was the point of the limit? Some could have exceeded it, but they could've just overtaken. If the limit was never introduced then people would be quite happy to move over and let fast people past. If they used this rule today the limit would probably be around 100mph, or more.
Germany doesn't have a limit on the Autobhan and it works extremely well. Thats why the majority of German made cars can do such high speeds (Mercedes, BMW, Audi etc.)
Quote: 'disgraceful' lol. I really don't think rests will rise by much, loads of people already speed. The only major difficulty I can forsee will be for people joining the m-way with slow vehicles. Lorries will be doing 56mph (max) joining a stream that could be moving at 80mph.
Why would there be a difficulty in joining the motorway for slower vehicles. The MAX limit will be 80mph and that would be in the 2nd and 3rd lanes at best. The 1st lane has always been reserved for slower vehicles. Not officially of course, but if slower vehicles can only reach set speeds then they will (and should) be in the 1st lane. As you said, lots of people already speed, so the fact that the limit has been made to 80mph will have absolutly no effect on the slower vehicles.
Quote: Why? I think it'll be great for traffic flow etc.
If people actually ahered to the speed limits and drive responsibly by using the first lane instead of hogging the middle lane, then traffic would be much less as the flow would be better. Knob-heads jumping lanes and under taking cars when they reach traffic also don't help matters. You know the type, the executive with his brand new company Audi A4 3.0 or his BMW 7 Series.
The police have declared war with drivers with speed cameras and limits, and it is going to be difficult to fix things as they are. They need the cash, and motorists are easy pickings. Motorists know this and get away with what they can when they can. The motorway is one of the very few places where motorists can get away with speeding on a regular basis, and that will soon stop as a resultof more cameras. It is a vicious cycle that shows no signs of ever ending.

Great, it'll be nice to see it strictly enforced. Maybe people will start taking limits seriously.

Hmm, I'm not certain what they mean by that, but I buttumed that they just mean that nobody would get away with speeding. It could mean that they'll stop people for doing 81mph, but I doubt it.
