If you was to be stopped by a police officer and your plates were checked then you could find yourself in prison for having the wrong plates on your car, especially if you have gone through a few cameras with the bad plates on.
Many officers who stop a vehicle radio in for a check on the vehicle registration, for any outstanding tickets and-or warrants. If this was to happen you would be found to have illegal plates on your vehicle and would be subject to the appropriate punishment.

Number Plate Law
The law states that, You must not alter, rearrange or misrepresent the letters or numbers Characters must not be moved from one group to the other (e.g. A242 ABC must not be displayed as A242A BC).
Offences may result in any or all of the following: A fine of up to £1,000 The registration mark may be WITHDRAWN The vehicle may FAIL the MOT test
