Reporting Speeding Policemen 558

I remember some years ago - be about 20plus - at Skegness, Lincolnshire. A motorist's wife was caught exceeding the speed limit, fined and points (no fixed penalties in those days) as a result of a motorcyclist cop doing a calibrated speedo check.

Some time later, this motorist then follows this same bike cop along the stretch outside Butlins on the A52 between skegness and ingoldmells which then had a 40 limit - cop was in excess of 60 I recall - motorist then pulls up along cop and states he is reporting cop for speeding which he did. Not sure of the logistics of how he reported - whether to the police themselves or he "laid an information" to the local magistrates, but it resulted in a conviction for the cop at the mag court.

Police appealed to crown court - conviction quashed - crown court said that a police officer CAN exceed the speed limit in the end of his duty - does not have to be an emergency!

And they always say its one law for them and one law for us - how right they are!!!!!!

ACPO Guidelines, are just that, Guidelines. Any ignorance of them by any force wouldnt have...

Interesting to note though that the motorist concerned was not prosecuted for the uncalibrated speedo check he executed whilst following the cop. The motorist gave evidence that he checked his speedo on a timed run almost immediately after "booking" the cop!

Reported in the Skegness Standard of the day - about 1982-4 area of time - facts are from memory but believed accurate.
