Risk perception

I am interested to hear how other drivers rank the relative risks of the following manoeuvres. Scenario is a high speed D2AP busy rural twin lane dual carriageway (no hard shoulder) with a simple at grade right angled minor road junction using a central reservation gap. buttume all roads perfectly straight with good visibility and acceleration-deceleration lanes in all the right places.

Nick Finnigan If you really knew that there was no other traffic without having to look (eg due to road closure) then there would be no difference. But in the real world you have...

Possible traffic movements are:

A Left turn into acceleration lane merge with traffic B Left turn into L1 C Left turn into L2 D Left turn from major L1 into minor E Left turn from major L2 into minor F Right turn from major road via gap into minor road G Right turn from minor road via gap into acceleration lane H Right turn from minor road via gap into L1 I Right turn from minor road via gap into L2 J U turn on major road L2 via gap into acceleration lane K U turn on major road L2 via gap into L1 L U turn on major road L2 via gap into L2 M U turn left into side road U turn there then right to L1 N Straight across major road via gap

Please rank A through N in order of perceived risk. I know roughly what I think the answer is, but I am interested to know why certain of the more dangerous moves are so popular. I don't want to prejudice answers.

eg ABCDEFGHIJKLMN* if you think they are already in the right order and all are acceptable safe driving behaviour.

Comments on the ones you would not even dream of doing is useful. (any popular permutations I have missed out?)

Please put a * where your personal risk threshold cuts off.

My interest stems from traffic survey and accident data on a "notorious" accident black spot on the A19 called the Black Swan crossroads.

Incidentally on a stretch marked "no U-turns" is the left turn into a side road followed by an immediate handbrake turn and then a right back onto the main road from the side road a legal move or not? My instinct is that it is against the spirit but not the letter of the law. Can anyone confirm this?

I ask because I had a police car do it in front of me recently.

Thanks for any responses (privately or on the newsgroup).

Regards, Martin Brown
