It will likely depend on whether it's an entirely electronic throttle - but a little irrelevant, really. I'm merely pointing out the compromise between smoothness in gear changes, with an auto. Sure, you can use the throttle much as you would in a manual, but if you are already at WOT, doing that would likely result in a bit of a lurch in forward progress.
I guess what I was really saying is that autos that slur gear changes to the point that they're almost unnoticable, do so at a cost. And doing so when accelerating fairly hardly, will either be at the expense of friction material, or progress - likely with quite a lurch, because autos tend to shift gears a little quicker than manuals, on account of not having to go through a neutral position.
Yebbut diseasels tend to be manuals, and horrible smelly, grimy things ;-)
It's relatively easy to make gear changes smooth - either with a manual, or an auto - at light to partial throttle openings, and doing so doesn't necessarily make it fully at the expense of friction material. But the more throttle opened, then you've either got to compensate with whatever "blends" the change in ratios in, and or lift the throttle - and give that we're talking about bigger throttle openings, that's going to be noticeable in terms of forward progress - so if you don't actually notice the gear change itself, you will in terms of acceleration.
