All you know is that I don't agree with every aspect of the IAM's teaching. What you don't know how I actually do use the controls. You accuse me of having a closed mind. Yet in my view there is more than one acceptable way to use the controls. You see only one way. The IAM way, or The Systems way. I'd say that indicates that you are the one with a closed mind. Not me.
recommends,
You are wrong. I can use the controls in any way I wish, and I don't always use them the same way. Sometimes I'll brake and then change down as the system appears to recommend. Other times I'll change down before braking. It all depends on circumstances, and how I feel like driving at the time. If I were told I had to use the controls in a certain way all the time, I could do that. But why should I. How is it less safe, or mechanically unsympathetic to change down before braking? All I hear is that it's not the systems recommended way. If someone could provide a logical reason why their way is better to practice all the time, without going into specific hypothetical situations to prove their point, I might agree with it.

Try what? To be taught to use a cars controls consistantly as a rote, when I see no reason for it. No thanks. At times though, I've no doubt that I do use them exactly as they would wish, but I see no reason to stick to one way only. I don't think about the mechanical aspect of driving a car. In a sense, changing gear braking etc, is all done in the background. I don't necessarily do them in any particular order, or necessarily think about it beforehand. My concentration is on controlling the car. My speed, positioning, and involvement with other road users.

And you are prejudiced in favour of the IAM. In one sense all opinions are based on prejudice, in favour or otherwise. And unless what I hear is all lies, I'm not completely uninformed. IMO I certainly have a sound basis for my opinion, which is all I need to make a reasonable and sensible decision about taking an IAM course. Mike.
