Other than as I said earlier, the explanation of it has been simplified (read dumbed down) in the current roadcraft, the system itself has not changed. The basic elements are still exactly the same as originally defined and are still applied in exactly the same way as they always have been.
Exactly. It works in no small part because it doesn't refer to specific speeds, gears, things or situations and it is completely flexible. One of the most common reasons why people have trouble with it is because they get too hung up on detail; They are unable to step back and look at the overall concept.
You still haven't answered the question. Do you know what it is? The fact that you are talking about "bits of it" would strongly indicate that you don't. The system is not a collection of individual parts to be thought of separately see my comment on detail above, rather it is a sequence of related actions each being dependant on the one before.
