Police officers undergoing driving courses (both standard and advanced) are issued with a copy of Roadcraft to study for the written part of the exam. I would not accept that the book is useless...

Yes, but with a lot of practice you probably could learn to plaster from a book. It's a trial and error thing. Without proper training practical things like these are a lot harder to do, but still possible.

Rant and OT :

Very good question! I would say schools are there to set standards, and so that pupils can speak to people with knowledge of past exam papers etc. We have a curriculum which schools should follow, and then students are graded in their exams to show what they've achieved. This standard should be the same over the whole of the UK.

I think young kids are a little different, but certainly with older (and well behaved ones) we could do without schools. Having said that I think culture is a problem, modern kids expect to be 'spoon fed' throughout their education. Some can learn for themselves though. Uni's the same, everything I've learnt is available in books. A few good lecturers have brought a few extra pieces of knowledge to the lectures, but most haven't. If I spent 3 years reading books, I could probably learn more than 2 degrees worth of stuff. Uni isn't about learning, it's about pbutting exams. When I get my degree result I won't be proud of it (even if it was a first), I don't really care about it anymore. I am proud of my A-levels though, I leant loads, found them interesting, and consider them to be more than just exams. lol Some of the maths I did at A-level was actually harder than most of the Maths I've been doing in my 3rd year at uni!

Advanced driving is a little different, it's a matter of being safe, not pbutting exams-tests (unless you want to). You interpret the skills in the book, and apply them in a way that seems to work. If they seem to be useful then you're probably doing it right, if they seem to be dangerous then you're probably doing it wrong. I do believe that the book can be dangerous on its own, but it can also be of benefit on its own. It probably depends who is reading it, and how they are practicing it.
