Police officers undergoing driving courses (both standard and advanced) are issued with a copy of Roadcraft to study for the written part of the exam. I would not accept that the book is useless without practical training to go with it, but it is clear from the thread on gear-changing that despite the clear advice in the book, and the fact that the Roadcraft system is taught to all advanced drivers, there are many who can't get to grips with it. Hence the value of practical training to accompany the book. I'm quite sure that if these doubters could just take a trip out with a traffic officer they would soon realise the benefits of the system of gear-changing.
For all those who do not have the benefit of undergoing police driver training I would heartily recommend a course with the IAM. Most drivers who commence such a course are staggered by just how much they are getting wrong, whilst believing that they are good drivers. I see it every day in my travels - poor positioning for overtaking, poor positioning on the approach to bends, total inability to judge the correct speed on the approach to a bend (there are real techniques of 'reading' a bend on the approach to it which are simply not taught on basic driving lessons), ,etc. etc.

It may not be palatable to many - but it is a truism that if you haven't undertaken any form of advanced driver training then you cannot consider yourself to be a truly 'good' driver. Without advanced training you are merely becoming competent at the basic skills taught during initial driver training. There is a vast difference between those basic skills and advanced skills.
