driving, not know often,

Or on a blind bend. I was thinking of mentioning that when you spoke of finding some other examples of observation techniques. Can be a bit disconcerting when the poles go off across country though. :-)

I've accepted that a commentary is necessary, in an instructor trainee situation, but I still feel it's better if a driver has 100% of their concentration on their driving though.

As far as road surfaces go, I always take note of any change. I've always been aware of the difference in terms of grip between different road surfaces. No doubt a legacy from my m-cycling days As a m-cyclist, if you didn't, there'd be a good chance of falling off. :-) Even sand on the road is a hazard to a m-cyclist, to a car as well come to that, but not to the same degree.

will have without this and

I'll go along with that possibility, which could be true as far as the majority goes, but I still believe there are some good drivers who are as competent as any. Including those with advanced traing. I suppose it could come down to how one buttesses competence, which is where our views diverge

It may have already been tried, but it would be interesting if a compebreastion could be organised in a closed environment, where advanced drivers competed against exceptionall good drivers without any qualifications. They'd both drive a course with unexpected hazards created, either real or potential, and the drivers would be judged, from outside the car, on how well they handled them, and negotiatiated the course. Afterwards they'd be quizzed on what they spotted on the course. Personally I wouldn't like predict that an advanced driver would win such a compebreastion. Mike.
