As professor Joad would have said. It all depends upon what you mean by 'truly' or 'good' driver. I would argue that primarily a good driver is one who drives in a safe manner. Who is aware of, and is considerate to other road users. Which would include of course, good road positioning. Whether they know the finer points of braking, gearchanging, etc, is secondary to the above. You don't need to know all that to be a safe, (good ?) driver.

If someone is interested in learning the finer points of car control, by all means let them go for some form of advanced training, but safe driving IMO relies more on a state of mind, rather than expertise with the actual physics of car control.

Without advanced training you are advanced

Thus ignoring all the knowledge that a driver interested in improving their skills have aquired, possibly over years of motoring. 'Reading' bends, noting road surfaces etc. The latter especially if you've graduated from m-cycles as I have.

But if a driver trained only to the basic 'pbutt test' standard does not know how to properly position for an overtake (nor even how to properly...

An advanced driver is not necessarily a safer driver, but it might help. I've seen more than one example of unsafe driving by police drivers. No doubt many can say the same. Mike.
