THe driver is required by law to have on his possession (he has to be able to produce on demand) the current weeks charts plus the last chart of the previous week. Charts must be handed to the Transport Manager no more than 21 days after their date. The TM must keep the tachographs for 12 months.

HOWEVER, digital tachographs are on their way. They were supposed to have been already introduced but as it is EU wide, it's not gone to plan and has been put back again. The driver will have a smart card that will store up to 28 days information and the traffic office will download the data off the tacho periodically although I forget the interval for that.
