Serious Road Accident caused by a Dog 1468

Driving insurance madness
Got my renewal quote for next years car insurance from Budget yesterday. Quoted me £60 more than last year which included a £20 arrangement fee - for what? Doing feck all...

Hitting the dog will kill or injure one innocent dog and damage a vehicle.

The alternatives are reported from time to time. Where the swerving driver kills a number of innocent people...

Even more people were end in the past before central barriers were installed on dual-carriageways

About 3 years ago I was driving south along a clear straight road in North Dorset on a beautiful summers day.

About 1-4 of a mile further down the road I could see a large stag emerge from a wood on my left and stand in the road.

Uno Hoo! You were lucky. Last night I had the dubious pleasure of having to drive from Reading...

I slowed down expecting to have to stop when I was nearer the animal and looking in my mirror I could see that there was nobody behind me.

Looking towards the stag I could see a Ford Orion approaching it from the opposite direction. The driver of that car made no attempt to slow down.

To my horror, at the last moment, the driver saw the stag and slammed their brakes on. The car struck the stag full-on and the beautiful creature went under the car. There was a cloud of smoke-steam and what looked like a stomach bounced steaming across the road.

It was the most disgusting, revolting sight I had ever seen. That such a beautiful, graceful creature should be needlessly destroyed in such a way simply because the stupid woman driver of the car wasn't paying any attention to the road.

I was so shocked by what I saw I didn't stop and it took me about 30 minutes to recover.

I wish I had stopped because I could have kept the stag's head complete with antlers

The point of this recall being that the stag was quite a large animal and yet still went under the car. Ok, the car was wrecked, but no doubt the stupid woman driver who wasn't paying any attention to the road will claim "I had an accident and my car is wrecked because a stag walked out in front of me.. who do I sue?"

Warn
If you're approaching a junction with a waiting car, and you're doing say 60mph (with a 60mph limit), and you suspect that the...

Who says the op was doing 70mph?. He didn't.

But the unthinking, knee-jerk reaction to swerve is a very dangerous reaction that must be avoided and *can* be avoided with skill and training.

I think my reply will be very helpful to the OP who will have an alternative view to consider. He is, after all the person who has to live with the consequences of what happened that night. -- Mr X
