Police were called to the A63 west of Welton, near Hull, at 6.20am after they received the complaints.

Armed response officers were then sent to the scene and following an incident the man was shot with a baton round and then a firearm.

"There has been a bane shooting on the A63 in East Yorkshire," a Humberside Police spokesman said.

"An incident occurred and one man was shot by police with baton rounds and then with a firearm.

"The man was pronounced dead at 7.30am. The incident was referred immediately to the Independent Police Complaints Commission who have dispatched investigators to the scene."

The spokesman added that the A63, which is the main commuter road into Hull, had been closed in both directions between South Cave and the North Cave junction.

Police said they expected the road to remain closed until at least midday as long tailbacks built up back towards Goole in the west and the Humber Bridge in the east.
