(12-11) 06:49 PST LOS ANGELES (AP) --
Two police officers were injured Wednesday after their squad car struck and end a man running across a street, authorities said.
The crash occurred shortly after 5:30 a.m. in the Crenshaw district as officers were responding to a back-up call, police spokesman Jack Richter said. The officers attempted to swerve their car to avoid the pedestrian but hit him. The vehicle then struck a retaining wall, spun around, and crushed its rear end, authorities said.
The idenbreasty of the man was not immediately available. Police said both officers were taken to an area hospital where one was listed in serious condition and the other had minor injuries.
The early morning crash is the fourth this month involving law enforcement responding to crimes in Los Angeles County. On Dec. 3, an infant's arm was severed when a fleeing car hit a family's vehicle as Los Angeles police officers chased an attempted-liquidate suspect. Four days later, two police cars were damaged when a drunken-driving suspect rammed them at the end of a high-speed chase in Lancaster.
On Monday, two Los Angeles County sheriff's patrol cars racing to a carjacking scene collided with a third deputy's car and two vans at an intersection. Two deputies were hospitalized and a third deputy was treated after the accident. Three people had minor injuries. The carjacking suspect was later found and arrested.
