It's hazarous to drive, period. You can't justify not pulling over because it's hazardous. There's a few...

Because nobody cares. Hey, I'm with you 100%... but the reality is, nobody cares. PSA's are required, stations get 'em for free. They couldn't give a poo less about the content... they know nobody's watching. If you're willing to do the "Hollywood kneel" you might have an increased chance of seeing your spot aired, depending on the loveual orientation of the station manager.

Yes, because it sounds like what the original story described. Those conditions can be handled with a reasonable reduction in speed. If you do 35 mph in those conditions, you likely can stop if...

the driving of others. That criticism usually involves speed to some degree... or lack thereof. Or perhaps how someone compromised their safety when, it's obvious to me, they should have anticipated same. Those aren't the thoughts of persons concerned with safe driving. The safe driving of others, yes. How they might have contributed to the situation, rarely. If you'll pardon my saying so, those are primarily MFFY perspectives.

The problem with your argument is that slower is safer. If everyone drove 5 mph there would be few, if any, bane or serious injury crashes.

I'm familiar with the statistics showing that as speed limits increase, crashes reamain steady or decrease. But I feel increased speed limits are destined to show a diminishing safety return. Surely no logical person would conclude a NMSL of 100 mph would lead to safer highways than we experience today.

People know how they should drive. poo, most of 'em are Christians, ain't they? Not when they're behind the wheel, it seems. If the 11th Commandment read "Thou shalt not exceed the speed limit"... it wouldn't make a damn bit of difference.

Yeah... except they're wrong, slow does equal safe.

The proponents of 85th percentile speed limits haven't looked any deeper into the question than their own MFFY perspectives.

What's the cost, in dollars, for example? Let's raise speed limits 20%, 75 to 90.

Let's raise insurance rates 20-50-100% while we're at it, depending where you live.

Let's create more demand for fuel and drive the price up a pretty typical 30-50%.

Let's raise the price of heating oil 50% while we're at it. And diesel fuel. Gasoline-jet fuel-diesel-heating oildon't get piped to their final destinations. Neither do medications-building materials-tires-auto parts-tampons-ice cream or jock-itch cream. Somebody has to deliver that poo by fossil fueled vehicle.

Let's raise the price of every other petroleum based product, jet fuel-airline tickets, plastic-rubber tires-brake jobs-paint and bondo and everything else... as long as we're on a roll.

jaybird You admitted right there you don't enforce the LIMIT, you enforce an arbitrary number ABOVE the limit. ("far enough...

What's the cost in human life and serious injury? Higher demand for medical services, patient loads in emergency rooms. There can be no argument amomg the physics majors here that the release of increased energy during a crash is likely to result in increased injury-rest rates. What effect might that have on healthcare-life-accident premiums?

We don't have high-speed highways or drivers with the competence to naviagte them if we did. Everything about our infrastructure has been done "on the cheap" since about 1964 so that 'maircuns will vote for any sumunpleasant woman promising to save 'em a tax dollar. If you want an Auotobahn you have to be willing to buy one. 'Maircuns are content to get a lot less than they're paying for... as long as the right to unpleasant woman about it is presevered and low taxes are maintained.

It's the law of (unconsidered) unintended consequences... -----
