Yes you would slow continuosly from about say 200 metres if the traffic was flowing smoothly with spaces. It is possible to slow gradually over a mbuttively long distance before you would stop, and it doesn't involve brakes at all.

the point of no return is subjective to each driver, and it's were you say, "bugger, can stop", and carry on through on amber (not red), and can depend on your current speed, traffic density, closeness of vehicle behind, how heavy is the vehicle behind, what is looking to cross the other junction when the lights change to green for them, are there any vehicles waiting to filter that will do so immediatley your lights change, but their filter may stay green. It all has to be decided on very quickly, and having observed the situation arround as you approach you have most if not all the data already to make an informed guess as to what the best course of action is. -- Carl Robson "Sorry Sir the meatballs are orf" (The poster formerly known as Skodapilot)
