The basic principle behind taxation is to extract just enough from the population that the country can be efficiently run, without making it economically and socially viable to up sticks and move somewhere else.

Labour is currently destruct-testing this notion to the limits by taxing the middle clbuttes and pbutting on much of this to the non-working clbuttes, and at the same time implementing the EU's daft regulations in exactly the most moronic and inconvenient ways possible so as to make getting out of an economic recession as improbable as possible.
The Tories, I would hope, would have the minimal intelligence not to continue on a losing path. One can but hope.
