I agree that 'feeding the wheel' is the best description - although I disagree that you should commence any turn by 'pushing'. What should happen is that you...

consider I

TBH I don't know how people can be so analytical about how they drive. Since this and the Roadcraft thread started, I've been trying to think of exactly how I use gears, braking, steering etc, and I've found it quite difficult. ATM I'm driving an auto, and have taken note the last couple of days how I steer. It looks like I mostly use pull-push or push-pull, I certainly don't always pull and then push. I might push first, Whichever is most convenient at the time, so AFAIC 'feeding the wheel' is a better description. On sharp corners though, where lots of lock is required, although I never cross my hands, I might use one hand to turn the wheel as much as half a turn. If you like, an extreme case of feeding the wheel in big chunks. Not having driven my Celica with a manual box for over a week, I haven't had a chance to see how I use the gears or brakes, and I can't recall the exact sequence, of my braking, and gearchanging. All I know is when I do drive it, it always seems to be in the right gear for the speed, and I've never noticed any problem with braking, interefering with gear changing, or vice versa. I do know I often don't use the brakes at all. Just slow down by matching revs and dropping a gear, then use the engine braking on it's own No doubt someone will tell me that that's all wrong, but it can mean I'm in the right gear to enter the bend, and accelerate out of it smoothly. Again, I don't do it all the time. Depends on how well I know the road, or how well I can see other traffic, hazards, pedestrians etc. Might be a roundabout on an empty road, where I know the speed at which I can comfortably negotiate it. I'm just not concious of the mechanics of driving, when I'm driving. I don't think about it. I'm thinking about the road, traffic, hazards etc. The physical part of driving is done in the background, so to speak.. Whatever I do as regards braking, gearchanging, and steering I buttume is reasonably correct, as I very rarely get caught out in the wrong gear, or at the wrong speed, or have to react quickly to something that I should have anticipated sooner. Mike.
