For multi-million year values of 'soon'.
This is exactly the point of view of the environmentalists...
FWIW, in answer to Hog's doubts about our ability to have much effect:
The planet spews out large amounts of carbon dioxide, which is absorbed by the environment, and eventually stored as stable deposits - carbonate rocks, coal, oil, etc, and slightly less stable forms dissolved in the ocean.
What we are currently in the process of doing is taking the small percentage of those deposits that is useful to us, and turning it back into CO2. The figures vary depending on who you ask, but we have something like a million years worth of stored carbon to play with, which is some multiple of the total amount of carbon currently in the biosphere.
So far we have managed to increase the amount CO2 in the atmosphere by about 50%, and could, without much effort, make that 200% in the next 50 years.
I think trebling the concentration of a gas in the atmosphere is a reasonably large result, whatever effect it has in the end.
