I think the problem is that a lot of the excessive speeders are the ones who drive like idiots anyway. I've seen them where they drive along busy motorways weaving in and out of everybody. They will almost certainly set the threshold at a speed higher than 71mph anyway, probably 85mph or higher. I don't really know how busy the M4 usually is (dispite living right by it), but if it's busy then 100mph probably won't be safe.

Another problem is that hardly anyone act on temporary speed limits. On the m-way I saw an advisory speed limit of 40mph, so I slowed to 40mph incase there was something like loads of traffic ahead. I was the only person doing less than 50mph, and I even got tooted at once or twice. On the way back there were compulsory limits, people didn't seem to pay any attention to those either. I think the problem is that speed limits are rarely appropriate so people just ignore them. If limits were increased it may make them put more 'trust' the limits.

now, and I think it would be a good idea to increase the limit. Although for this we really need to get rid of the idiots because they'll go even faster, and weave in and out of traffic even faster. One of the other problems of 100mph+ is that the cars can take it, but the crash barriers can't, they're only designed for 70mph.

Motorways could easily be safe at high speeds, but there are too many idiots! I think the need to focus on catching the idiots, and then relax the speed limits.
