From the browbeating the motorist gets in the media (from the Police, and from "Campaign Groups"), the lack of visible TrafPol doing anything other than pick up chips0, or stop speeders.
And as for the *other* police, I don't see hide nor hair of them from one year to the next, except when having pulled someone over for (presumably) speeding.
(I suppose that if I went out drinking on a Friday-Saturday night, I'd see hordes of them, trying to stop the locals from killing each other having necked 15 pints of Wife Beater)
All the adverts you see (or the vast majority of them) are "Don't speed", rather than "Don't drive drugged up", "Don't drive while stupid", "Don't drive dangerously", or "Stop nicking your neighbours property, you pikey chavscum"
My own (probably non-represenbreastive) experience of 6 dealings with the police were 1 to report a stolen bike (me initiating the contact), 1 to report a possible break-in (again me initiating the contact), and the other 4 were for traffic "offences". One for speeding (hands up to that one), one for suspicious driving (I stopped off at work, while at Uni, to pick up a printer that had been delivered at work). Once again for suspicious driving (I noticed a police "roadblock" one morning, so took a route away from it, and was persued by a new guy in a panda car, looking for directions!), and one last one, was stopped by a non trafpol for a word, after I overtook him (doing an indicated 70 on the dot), saying I must have been speeding, because his Panda Focus has a highly calibrated speedo, and he was doing 70. (This is despite the fact that in my old car 70 was only 63 in reality)
Pete.
0 may be untrue, however the only police car my mum ever sees, is the one delivering mail from Wrexham or Ruabon to Llangollen, or the driver training cars stopping to eat chips at a local beauty spot.
