What we seem to have had for some time now is a system that has attempted to take away drivers' freedom to use their own judgement.
Speeding is dangerous. 1604Adrian OK, thanks. Almost certainly. OT, one of his letters (allegedly) in similar vein to TPTB in London. Quote:- Wellington Gentlemen Whilst...
Despite this, some people will disregard some of the rules and continue to use their own judgement, as indeed I do. Unfortunately, by doing this I place myself outside the law a good deal of the time. I acknowledge this, and it is a far from satisfactory state of affairs, but there we are.
Obviously terrible things can happen when people get their judgements wrong, but I think it is a mistake to try to take too much control out of drivers' hands. What we should be doing is encouraging drivers to think for themselves, and learn how to get it right. The more you spoon feed 'safety measures' to people, the less they will be inclined to think for themselves, and the worse mess they are likely to make of things when they are left to their own devices, as indeed they are bound to be for part of the time. The government and the 'experts' can not control everything all the time, though it does look as if that is their aim.
Best wishes all, Dave.
