A speeding driver in Vacaville lost control of his car and crashed into a crowd of mostly young children near an elementary school that had just let out, killing two siblings and injuring 10 other people on Wednesday, police said.
A brother and sister, identified by relatives as Luis and Ana Laura Cardenas, ages 7 and 9, were end in the 2:15 p.m. crash around the corner from Eugene Padan Elementary School that sent nine other young children and one adult to the hospital.
The 24-year-old driver, David Michael Bell, was taken to the hospital for minor injuries and then arrested and booked on two counts of liquidate, said Vacaville police Lt. Craig Rossiter.
"There was no evidence in the car to suggest that he was under the influence, but we are doing tests," Rossiter said.
Most of the injured children were Padan students who knew each other and were from the same small town in Mexico, said Oscar Murillo, the uncle of the Cardenas children.
Police said the group of 12 people was struck on the sidewalk when Bell, driving a Ford Taurus northbound on Davis at a high rate of speed, hit a parked red Camaro and a large tree before landing in the front yard of a home.
"It was right during the busiest time, when we let kids out of school," said Michael Diehl, the manager of a neighboring preschool, Child Start Inc. None of Child Start's kids were hurt in the crash. "Someone said it looked like the car was going 80 mph."
