Since I know my pal Chuck doesn't check in here much any more, I'll come to his defense with the same ammunition: Before the age of 35, I was about as clueless as you are, Carl. Not quite as bad as young Gunnar, here, but not much better, either. At that point, like Chuck, I undertook training and gained experience both autocrossing and in BMW CCA club driving schools. It is now nearly 20 years later. Like Chuck, I have a deep understanding and appreciation of automotive handling dynamics and I have an intimate understanding of my car's handling capabilities at all speeds I may decide to reach on the streets. Like Chuck, I can routinely, safely, and repeatably do things in my car that would probably scare the crap out of others like you. And you, too, Gunnar.

That doesn't mean I'll be out there on I-294 trying it (For one thing, I tend to stick to I-94 all the way through town on my way through Chicago.). I go to Road America locally to drive my car ('88 BMW 535is) at its top speed somewhat above 130 (before braking about as hard as possible for Canada Corner). I autocross at Miller Field or State Fair Park. I teach others how to do the same. That Daddy has a P-car SUV and Mommy has a new Banglized (UGLY) 6er doesn't necessarily mean that either one of them has a clue how to drive them decently. I could be wrong, but I'd be willing to bet that neither is in the dedicated marque clubs for those cars, and that's unfortunate for all of you.

The Windy City BMW Club is a great bunch of folks who run some pretty good driver training programs, including some for kids like you. I'd recommend getting in touch with them and see what they offer. And when a northern suburban physician by the name of Farnsworth tells you something about driving, listen ...
