I'm not in a position to know what most drivers buttume, and presumably neither are you. Perhaps you are making buttumptions of your own based on the behaviour you see.

Just about everything we do on the road affects others to some degree - I don't think a temporary speed adjustment of a few metres per second to create a gap is too extreme a sacrifice to make, especially if it looks like the joiner is about to run out of road, having been denied access so far.
Otherwise its foot over the brake and give the joiner a warnig toot.
Taking this one stage further, would you move over to allow someone to pull out from a side road ?

Do you mean ever, or always? Difficult to answer without specifying the circumstances, but yes I have done so many times.
