Silk It isn't the source of *all* road safety ills, but if you look at the statistics then driving...

2 situations, which is safe and which is unsafe?

1. Car driving at around 85 on 3 lane motorway. As driver gets round a corner-brow of hill he sees in the distance (about 1000 yards) lots of people braking (not too many people on the road at this time) and wonders why people in the distance are braking for no apparent reason as the conditions are dry and warm. Driver slows down to less than 70, as he does he sees a speed camera van on a bridge over the motorway.

2. Car driving along the motoway at 65mph. Not too many cars around, warm and dry roads. Driver sees a speed camera van in front on a motorway bridge, panics and brakes causing drivers behind to also slow-brake-change lane as they wonder what the &*^* is happening.

Just cos car 1 was speeding he is showing that he is been observant whereas, like many drivers, the second doesnt see the speed camera van till late on (dont suppose he would be looking for them as he is only doing 65 and he thinks, driving safely) is not been particularily observant.

Wrong. You need to go away and learn at a better school. Correct, but that's NOT what you said. Now substansiate your buttertion or withdraw it. Like I said, you have a *serious* comprehension problem...

Letter of the law and common sense would say that BOTH are wrong for one reason or another but one of them in my opinion (1) is a safer example than the other. This of course wouldnt make the driver in case 1 a safer-better driver in all circumstances of course.

How many times do we see people panic braking when they see the white lines on the road where a GATSO has previously been? People just showing how unobservant they are, probably the same people that dont use lane discipline nor use indicators when changing lane etc

I do speed, am not proud of it, but admit it. Having said that, I do try to be a considerate driver towards other road users. Try to be observant, courteous while making progress at a speed that suits the conditions (while maybe not the law). I am though, starting to stick to the speed limits more and more now, especially non-motorways-dual carriageways. Think thats cos I drive a SUV and not as quick as other cars I have driven and dont hold the road as good either.

David Knowles If you had two pints of "Stella" beer, which seems to be 5.2% alcohol by volume, that's equivalent to 2.08 fluid ounces of alcohol. AFAIK about two pints of beer at...

Just my thoughts, sure that others will disagree etc, but thats the nature of the forums, dont post if u want people to agree with you! We all, after-all different people.

I will of course, admit that I am not the best driver in the world, I do break the law (traffic law) on occasions, Have 3 points on my licence (never had more than 3). It seems that some people that post on here NEVER break motoring laws, they are so perfect a driver you would think they have a DOT driving examiner next to them while they are driving. They NEVER make a mistake, NEVER misjudge a situation, they have the new electronic system in their vehicles that tells them exactly whats going to happen in front of them in the next 5 minutes so they can plan ahead in time.
