It does not smoke at idle or startup, even running regular diesel fuel without cetane improvers or biodiesel. The only time it has smoked was during winter when I was having a problem with the fuel filter and the engine would stall. After changing the fuel filter, the problem went away.

For older diesels they do sell smoke suppressants. Usually they are ethyl nitrate based cetane improvers, they also improve the cold starting of the engine and are often used by truck drivers. Usually, this is added to premium diesel fuel in the US, and by 2006 all diesel fuel should have improved cetane to meet clean air regulations (in California all diesel fuel is ultra-low sufur and has reduced aromatics and increased cetane levels, mandated by law). You can also run biodiesel in the engine, and this will cut soot in older diesels by more than 1-3-1-2 for about a 20 percent mixture. I have a friend who makes biodiesel, he has an old diesel rabbit pickup. Without biodiesel the engine definitely makes a little smoke and noise, with some biodiesel the engine will not smoke at all. He also has a TDI, and he doesn't think biodiesel makes much difference in the noise or performance of the engine, so my guess the TDI already has good pollution controls working.

Of course, I don't expect for you to know a damn thing about what I'm talking about, nor do I expect you are willing to change your mind, so I am wasting my time...
