Speeding sucks 4157

What does a 160mph speedo have to do with driveability on the Autobahn? Unlike you I know the Autobahn network in Germany very well and have logged many thousand kilometers at speeds you would poo your pants at in utter terror.

I do. Doesn't change a thing.

For the conditions: Yes. Fast in general terms: No.

Non-sequitur. Although acceleration is highest at torque peak, you can't actually stay near the torque peak during a quarter- mile...

Maybe you should leave your hick town sometime and get a glimpse of the real world, instead of making dumb statements. I am German and I can butture you that the horsepower numbers over there have been climbing just as fast as they have over here. BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi sell their luxury models at record numbers, Lamborghini and Ferrari have long waiting lists. Base models die in the dealer lot. The 3l-Lupo is being phased out because no one wants it. The Smart is costing it's manufacturers an arm and a leg. And Magnulus prattles on about how his puny VW is tops in other countries, because he just can't face the fact that he bought a lemon.

BTW, VW is in big trouble in Germany because of the extremely cancerogenous particle emissions of its outdated TDI technology.

If you can't afford the money for fuel you may want to switch to a bicycle. More suited to your driving capabilities (you won't be less likely to die, but the likelihood of you killing someone else is significantly lower).

I know more about diesels than you will learn within the next 50 years given your rate of learning so far.

I know your car is an automatic, but the only thing that is fuzzy in your VW is your brain. Nevertheless, if your car is always shifting up at 1900-2200rpm you are either driving like the proverbial turtle or your slushbox is defective.

I have driven a whole bunch of manual TDIs. Their utter lack of torque and their extremely narrow power band give the driver two options. Drive like a snail (Magnulus) or beat the living poo out of it (Chris). My way of driving it may not be very economical but at least I am not a rolling roadblock like you are.

Several TDIs I have driven exhibited the same characteristic, they seemed as if they were about to start pulling around 4000rpm but shortly after you run into the rev limiter. Driving the TDI around at 1500rpm and 'enjoying' its extremely sluggish acceleration is not for me, thank you.

Diesels produce most of their torque at lower rpms. Unfortunately torque at low rpms doesn't translate into acceleration. Acceleration is proportional to the integral over the torque curve between the shift points. Even more unfortunately the TDI doesn't have much torque to begin with and a narrow powerband to boot.

The TDI is never quieter than my gasoline powered car, regardless of how I shift. Btw, at 60mph my engine runs at 1300rpm.

If Smart is doing so poorly, why is it selling in Canada now? And VW is debating selling the Polo in the US as well. The Smart car had a rough start in Europe...

PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT! You owe me a new keyboard.

But I will give you some free advice, which you should take. Learn. Listen. Read. Drive. Maybe 300000 miles from now you will have enough experience to tell me how to drive. I doubt that but one can hope.

Until then you are an overgrown teenager with an ego the size of Texas, zero driving skills and a dangerous mix of half and not understood bits of information gathered from exactly the wrong sources like your car dealer and your insurance agent and your mommy. In other words, the usual dangerous student driver.

On Sat, 16 Apr 2005 18:44:57 -0400, Magnulus You claim you are a guy. Now behave like one and learn how to drive. All diesels smoke under heavy acceleration. Some more, some less, but...

Btw, with my car I consistently get 3-4mpg more than the same model with a slushbox gets with me as a driver, apparently I am doing something right.
