Maybe because they have a lot of unsold models they are trying to get rid of? Smart is losing millions:

The Smart manufacturer lost 600 million Euros last year and they are expecting similiar losses for 2005. They sold only 155000 cars, so with every car sold they lost 4000 euros.

No, it isn't and it also isn't state of the art compared to the diesel engines from other manufacturers. It was state of the art when it came out over 10 years ago but VW utterly failed to keep up.

Yeah, for the last few months because they are being forced to by pressure from politicians and the public.

What does that help you when your car is smoking like a chimney? Your particular diesel stinks. When are you going to pony up and buy a particle filter for it, miss treehugger?

Nonsense.

Weird, the particle filters in Europe cost around 600 Euros plus installation, how do you think the US particle filters will cos magically 2-3 less?

It contains a few carcinogens but only a fraction of the diesel's and unlike the gaseous carcinogens in the gas engine's exhaust the particles, that enter your lungs stay there and wreak havoc.

Then you lied about your car always shifting at 1900-2200rpm.

Who cares about a diesel rabbit? They are ultra-rare nowadays for good reason. TDIs on the other hand, while not really common, are much more common than that Rabbit and most of them are rolling roadblocks, whereas the rest blows soot all over everything.

You seem overly concerned with fuel economy. Apparently you are not really able to afford a car at all and are trying to scrape by. What you should be concerned with is safety, because fuel can be replaced, your life cannot. And to drive safely you have to go as fast as the traffic around you. If you are incapable of doing that, you better return your dricer's license to the DMV and buy a bicycle. Come to think of it, given your lack of driving skills that would be the best for everyone anyway.

Magnulus stinkpots if up? It doesn't matter. The diesel-haters will hate no matter what the evidence. Christian Huebner (C.H.) will make stuff up...

Your car is a slug, and you seem to be one too, otherwise you would already know that the car is one. I advise against trying a fast car for two reasons. One, you are incapable of handling one safely. And two, afterwards you probably won't like your diesel any more.

Btw, I am not particularly against diesels, chipped Chevy Duramax or Dodge Cummins make great tow vehicles. Mercedes-Benz even makes fast car diesels and so does VW (V10 TDI). I merely dislike the slugs VW and a few other manufacturers sell in their econoboxes.

But it has an extremely narrow powerband and thus the acceleration is still worse than the gasoline models.

So you are saying that you advise replacing the slow-as-molbuttes Jetta with a slow-as-molbuttes Prius, just because you think torque is everything?

Quieter than older TDIs, not than gasoline engines.

My power band (useful for acceleration) reaches from 1300rpm to 6200rpm. That's what I call a reasonably wide power band. Whether your power band reaches from 2000 to 3800 or from 2000 to 4000, it is still narrow.

Tell your mom to sell her Ford.

It had more to give, it was noticeably less slow at my driving style than it was at the style recommended by the dieselists. It also was annoyingly loud and the mileage sucked, but I was in a hurry to get somewhere and my employer was paying for diesel anyway, so I didn't care.

Last time I checked, I was still a guy. My diesel doesn't smoke, not even with hard acceleration, even if its running regular diesel. The...

Btw, VW has problems with the longevity of diesel engines driven hard, they often don't even live to see 100000km, which is terrible, especially considering that diesel engines used to last half a million miles easy. But don't fret, your engine is also not gonna last half a million miles, TDIs are made for quick consumption and to then be thrown away.
