Magnulus stinkpots if up? It doesn't matter. The diesel-haters will hate no matter what the evidence. Christian Huebner (C.H.) will make stuff up in order to...

Non-sequitur. Although acceleration is highest at torque peak, you can't actually stay near the torque peak during a quarter- mile. Note, when I say 'torque' in this thread, I am referring to torque at the wheels; and we're buttuming full throttle here (as the torque curve obviously changes when you use less throttle). After you have pbutted your torque peak for a particular gear, your acceleration value is decreasing. When you change gear, your new torque peak, although at the same RPM, is a lesser value than the previous gear's peak (you can calculate it from the gear ratios). You can never re-attain the same torque value for the rest of the quarter-mile. In other words, the point of maximum acceleration for a run is when you reach your torque peak in 1st gear. (This is buttuming we have full traction throughout the run).

1) availability- lots of automatic TDI's now days, especially relatively new ones 2) traffic- don't...

The best time to change gear is the point when the torque (decreasing) in the current gear equals the torque (increasing) in the new gear, ie. you maximise the area under your torque-at-the-wheels graph.

This is the same point as where the HP (decreasing) in the old gear equals the HP (increasing) in the new gear, which is of course equivalent to maximising your horsepower (and isafterthe torque peak in the new gear).

This is all very clear if you look at a graph.
