I nominate Virginia.

Arif Khokar We have based our driving laws on fact, but thresholds are required for enforcement. It's really very simple...

We have roads around here with:

Guard rails with ends not buried in the ground so cars can still hit them.

Little ditches very close to the edge of the road the grab your wheels if you stray off the edge.

Lots of trees very close to the road - go off road, you don't get a nice soft cornfield or soy bean field, you get a big oak to hit.

Poorly graded roads. Rt. 3 east of Fredericksburg is like that - the tilt of the road varies greatly depending on where you are. You end up holding the wheel in a rest grip, chickened one way or the other just to keep going straight.

Very small or no paved aprons on the edges of the road - again, Rt. 3 east of Fredericksburg has no pavement beyond the road's edge lines - go over the line, you're in the grbutt.

Big holes just off the edge of the road. Again, Rt. 3 - deep ruts just off the road exist to throw a car out of control if you drop a wheel into one accidentally.

Twisty, hilly roads that carry enormous amounts of traffic. Route 206 from Rt 3 to Dahlgren, Va. carries the Navy Base's workforce to and from the base. This road has no shoulders, lots of hills and some curves, Meeting cars coming the other way suddenly is easy to do. Its 2 lanes, so if you stray across the line even a little at the wrong time, you can die a quick rest. Its a very dangerous road.

Incredible amounts of congestion - the lack of needed road building forces an ever increasing commuter group to continue clogging the same roads, with continuously worsening congestion and therefore safety. Politicians keep proposing "slow growth" to slow down this degradation, when they ought to be proposing "build roads".

I've talked to other people that agree that Virginia has the most dangerous roads they've ever seen anywhere in the US. I've driven all of the states of the lower 48 and can't recall worse conditions.

I'll go along with that. When I first moved here, I thought I'd be spending a lot of time 50 miles up the road in DC. But after driving I-95, and getting exposed...
