Steering wheel not straight after tracking "dead on" 154

time and wheel overcome amount front checks

My argument with Conor, concerned his statement, that the right way to set tracking, was to set the steering wheel to the straight ahead position, then adjust the track rods. Thus ignoring the fact that if the rack, for some reason was not also in it's central position, the steering setup would be wrong.

Conor seems to believe that unequal length track rods only makes the lock greater in one direction than the other. This is not true, for the reasons I've already given, concerning the different angular movement of the track rods, and hence the track arms they're connected to.

The only way a steering system can be set up to ensure it is right, is to set the tracking with the rack in it's central position, which will ensure that both track rods are the same length. If the steering wheel is out of position with the rack centralised, it should be removed and reset.

On a twisty and narrow road? In the wet? Sensible... Why, if it's a narrow twisty...

I agree that the straight ahead tracking can be correct with unequal length track rods. What I disagree with, is Conors idea that it only affects the steering lock Mike.
