I don't know how far the average Chicagoan walks to get to the train station, but millions of them every year wait under the heat lamps. I used to be one of them.
Not in areas like downtown Chicago. The way land prices are rising here in SoCal, I won't be surprised when "free" parking starts to be phased out here, as well. That's *really* going to freak some people out...
I've worked at places where ostensibly there was "free" parking, but the reality was there were more employees than parking spaces, and finding an available space was a challenge. Double-parking was a daily occurrence, with regular announcements over the PA system such as "would the owner of license plate 3MVD479 please move your vehicle?" As you can imagine, in such conditions door dings were also a daily occurrence.
I took the bus to that job.
You're typical of people today - when selecting your home, you gave ZERO consideration to things like transit stops, or whether there were any stores within walking distance of your home. The thought of walking anywhere or taking public transit never even occurred to you. But I bet you're within a mile or so of that freeway on-ramp.
Taxing Drivers By The Mile 1756Matthew Russotto) That's because most of the costs of driving are subsidized, and therefore "hidden" from you. If you look at a place like downtown...
More power to ya.
