Your last point overlooks a certain point. Let me start by talking about Formula 1. Now there is a set octane limit in F1, which means that the petrol companies have to look at more crafty ways of improving the performance of their petrol inside an engine. Different hydrocarbons have different burning properties depending on their structures, and this can be used to fine tune the explosion inside the cylinders so that the power is produced in a more effective way. Optimax a development based on Shell's F1 research, and is not just normal high octane super-unleaded. When it was first introduced it was only down in England near the Shell refineries that you could buy it. I'm not saying it is synthetic but I do believe Shell have altered the proportions of certain molecules in some way in order to boast performance.

If you look at the Shell website they certainly used to hint at this I will try to find the page.

I'm well aware there is a lot of marketing bs in almost everything these days but I do think there is something in this.
