It is hardly the same thing :-)
A high IQ is likely to stay with you without further practice, but without further practice driving skill can wither away, being replaced with over confidence in ones own "tricks". I prefer to have someone who treats driving with the respect it deserves, to look over my own driving with a critical eye. Only if I do that can I be sure I am driving as safely as I am able.
The IAM and TripleS a reconciliation 383MrBitsy I didn't leave, but if you had encountered the Observer I had for my first drive I think you would have been a bit shocked, and indeed the Chief Observer I was...
TripleS is a good case in point. He says he is a safe driver, but how does he know? A clean 30 year record may be partly down to luck, and the only way to be sure is to have your driving looked at. He did this but left because someone dared to criticise. I see that as ignorance and over confidence in ones own skill.
It isn't about browny points, its about learning a craft to keep oneself, and others, as safe as possible. I have now been tested by the IAM, RoADA and the DSA as part of the ADI course, and I will be retested by the DSA and RoADA on a regular basis.
