Silk I'm not quite sure how to interpret that. Since my original driving lessons I have had no formal training, so on that basis...

Jeff York Thank you Jeff - you're working well. :-) I'm already in enough bother with one or two folk here that this little proposition shouldn't do too...

No, TripleS is a name I adopted when I joined PistonHeads, and it means Swift, Smooth, Safe, as those are the qualities (not necessarily in that order) I think we should aim to have. I have been criticised for mentioning Swift rather than putting Safe first, and I can understand that. I would merely say that Safe is the bottom line so to speak, but I agree it is the most important element.

Why arrogance, just because I have a degree of confidence in my style, my views etc. Unlike some contributors I have never sought to dismiss other points of view outright. As far as I am concerned we each say our piece and everybody can decide for themselves which bits make the best sense to them.

OK thanks, but all I'm suggesting is that my style, and the various elements of it, are not necessarily yielding an inferior result when compared with those who follow 'the system' consistently in minute detail. In other words it works well for me, in relation to the type of driving I do, and it has done over a very long period.

I have not said that, or in any way sought to give that impression.

I'm quite prepared to listen to anybody at all, but they need to be willing and able to show why their system is best, and that my system is failing to deliver the goods. If it can be shown that my style is inadequate to deliver a safe and pleasant result, why do they not do that if it is so easy. In any case, may I ask what is your own qualification for judging these matters?

..and that is in fact the way I have approached the matter. From what you say there, you are using your own judgement when considering new ways of doing things, as I do, so what's the difference?

No I haven't done that. My feeling has been that while their system is very good, it is not the only way of getting a decent result. What the IAM teaches, and the ways in which they do it, may well be very helpful to young drivers who have not yet evolved a comfortable style of their own. Perhaps in many cases they will have been having particular difficulty with some aspects of driving so they go for help, which is fair enough.

Good driving can, I suppose, be measured in various ways, depending on what your particular objectives may be. In my case I do happen to believe that the style I have developed gives a safe and reliable result. It certainly enables me to drive very long distances without causing any concern to my pbuttengers or indeed anyone else, and I do try to be aware of these considerations. It may fall short of strict IAM standards in some ways, but I'm really not sure that it is appreciably inferior to what they promote. If you are able to do so, please explain in terms of practical details where I'm going wrong.

I've already suggested that Mark, Ray and Silk meet me to compare notes. What about you also joining in?

Best wishes all, Dave.
