The Rapid dissolution Of the SUV

Some of the SUVs and big pickups are driven by people who contrive to need them for their business. Which some genuinely do, even if it isn't obvious at any given moment -- if you are burning money and-or customer goodwill while renting some adequate vehicle. In recent years, at least, there have been tax advantages to choosing a vehicle over 6,000 pounds for this:

Such vehicles are also exempt from the "gas guzzler" tax at the time of purchase, regardless of their use.

There are also people whose choices in recreational activities mandate a large powerful vehicle, which they may then have to drive for other purposes as well. In particular the tow ratings of ordinary pbuttenger cars these days usually range from "a couple thousand pounds" all the way down to "don't."

Others, of course, are purely personal vehicles bought by people who have no technical need for their advantages -- bought just because it became fashionable, or from a sense of machismo, or due to a perception that your kids could be mashed flat at any moment if you drive them around in anything less, or other reasons that must feel a bit less compelling at the gas pump than they did a year or two ago.
