Dave The M5 at J4 often has huge tailbacks exiting northbound. Last night there was a half a mile queue of cars on the hard shoulder trying to get off 1 with the average speed in L1 being about 40mph. As this was where I wanted to get off I stayed in L1 and drove right past the queue until I got to the sliproad where I could see that the right hand side of the two lane sliproad was half empty so I could indicate and pull off there. I needed to go left at the island so I planned to do a lap of the island and exit but as it happened a coach just didn't pull away as the lights changed so I could easily pull over and go left. I reckon that saved me a good twenty minutes by not sitting in the queue on the hard shoulder , and had I not been able to exit I'd have just carried on to the next junction and got off there. In the past I've had cars ahead of me just stop in L1 which is not pleasant at all when you can see hgvs bearing down on you from behind

1 what is the group's opinion on this? More or less sensible than queuing in L1?
