They were doing the right thing. They just did it the wrong way. You never pull off onto the left shoulder on an interstate if you can help it.
Had I been the driver, I would have sped up and moved to the right as fast as I possibly could have. I'm also wouldn't have bothered whining about it. I might have used them as a lead to get to my destination faster though ;)
A 20 to 25 mph differential doesn't lead to cars suddenly appearing on one's rear bumper (buttuming one checks their mirrors more than once a minute).
Sorry, but I don't buy that. Unlike slowing down to find a gap, pulling onto the left shoulder is extremely dangerous. People have died because of it.

Now you see why people complain about arbitrarily low speed limits. Even people who aren't habitual speeders get bitten (like your son who got pulled over in Christiansburg) for not doing anything out of the ordinary. If your son is unlucky enough to get a second ticket within the next 3 years or so, I just hope you're not paying for his insurance.
