Well, the platoons around here are mostly "clumps" with 2 or 3 people, depending on whether its...

Not in this discussion. We've been talking about a 10 mph or so differential within the platoon itself. After all, even in a platoon, some are pbutting and some are being pbutted. There are likely very few vehicles all going exactly at any particular speed within that range.

That's merely your supposition. There's no logical reason to support it as a "given" premise other than your wanting it to be true. I don't grant it.

Not really. You as a speeder may *think* you are more alert to risk and that negates it... but only for you. You're making unwarranted buttumptions that the trafrfic around you as well is not put more at risk by your variant behavior in the platoon. It isn't. The risk is heightened. The lesser risk is not to incur the hazard at all, rather than to rely on your perhaps false sense of alertness alone while you're messing with someone else's safety.

Unwarranted conclusion. As I say, it's not really a balancing act wherein your heightened alert offsets whatever hazards you may encounter at higher speed.

Not if they maintain proper spacing, which I often see on our crowded freeways.

And what makes you think the *speeder* does *not* have cars beside him either - incurring the very same consequences? He doesn't have a private separated road to pbutt all these folks on. This is the fallacy I've been pointing out - in fact, the speeder faces the unpredictability of *numerous* drivers as he goes past them. Maybe even all of the ones in the platoon. He's not free of that because he's gong 20+ faster. In fact, he's lessened his options, or more pertinent, the time and space in which to make them, in an unexpected situation because of his speed.

And how is a speeder immune to the drunk or stoned driver? All of this cuts both ways.

I think we need a definition of "speeder". Is it someone who exceeds the posted speed limit - period or is it someone whose speed varies continuously sometimes above and sometimes below...

It certainly does. The speeder is the one responsible for the situation. No speeding, no situation...

The roads belong to everyone, and the situation you wish for can't be achieved on the roads that most Americans drive. Speeders don't get clear zones on urban freeways. They are, in fact, exposing themselves to even more hazards since they come into close contact with many more other drivers than the driver who is maintaining flow.

Wanna bet! The rate of approach to slower vehicles ahead is analogous to the increasing approach of the invaders as your speed increases. Increasing level of alertness indeed may get you through one or two more levels, but it'll get you in the end.
