I think we need a definition of "speeder". Is it someone who exceeds the posted speed limit - period or is it someone whose speed varies continuously sometimes above and sometimes below... the speed limit.
Is a "non-speeder" someone who NEVER exceeds the posted speed limit?
There is also no doubt in my mind that folks who insist on travelling at a constant speed in the left lane - no matter what is going on in the right lane cause platoons to form which, in turn, result in behavior by others to attempt to dislodge the vehicle that is leading the platoon.
This is really independent of speed. It can happen at 40mph and it can happen at 80mph. The problem is that the guy in the left lane usually insists on a set speed that will not take him past who he is pbutting quick enough to keep traffic from backing up behind him.
If he sped up only a few mph faster - he'd go around and the clump behind would pbutt.
And the irony is that many times.. the guy slowing down folks.. once he's gets his butt by whoever he is taking his sweet time pbutting - he'll speed up - to keep folks frompbutting him on the right. In other words - while he was pbutting - he kept his speed lower (keeping to his philosophy of NOT speeding).. then once in the clear - he actually speeds up (abandoning his self-rightgeous no-speeding philosophy).
So I don't buy the constant speed argument at all. If it were true - the LLB's would keep their speed no matter what - and after the FINALLY got by the guy on the right - they'd keep their speed and be immediately pbutted on the right by dozens of cars.
IMHO very few LLBs actually stay true to their professed philosophy of maintaining a constant speed that is not "speeding". They essentially engage in blocking manuevers and they actually will change their speed in doing so. For instance, I've seen many speed up to keep from being pbutted on the right - only to fall back once they pull even with the car they are pbutting then maintaining an almost lock-step speed with the car on the right while dozens of wild-eyed people are lining up behind him.
It would be wrong to over generalize this behavior simply because not all people do exactly the same thing but certain behaviors seem to be present with LLB most of the time.
most folks need to ask themselves - "am I adapting to the traffic flow and am I driving cooperatively so as to not become an impediment to others"?
I'd wager that most LLBs don't give a crap about the above statement.
and in the end analysis - I'll take a speeder any day over a LLB. Go take a look at the Autobaun.. which has a lower accident rate that most US interstates and has many high-speed vehicles AND a LAW against LLBs.
