Personally I think the points system should be abolished. Banning should relate to the specific offence, not to a totting up of points for minor offences. Minor speeding offences could start with a low fine. Subsequent offences could have fines based on a percentage of the individuals income, which escalates with a similar offence within a fixed time period. Maybe no similar offence within say a 5 year period, resets the clock, so to speak. At the same time if the offender can't, or doesn't want to pay the fine, they can opt to pay a nominal fine and be banned instead. Persistant offenders could find after a few offences, that they can no longer afford to get caught for speeding. The fine could really hurt. Haven't really thought it through, but I think something on those lines would be a fairer system than the one we have at present. Banning someone for minor speeding offences seems a bit OTT to me. There must be better ways of discouraging speeding, without banning, with all the consequences that could have on the individual concerned. Possible loss of job, etc. I know there will be those who say, if you can't take the fine, don't do the crime, but I don't think that really takes all the issues into consideration. Mike.
