Having respect for oil scarcity is not "goofy" in the slightest. If you want to talk about "power freaks," look at all the superficial punks who think they need 300hp to cruise the boulevard. That sort of ego-based gluttony is where the real problem lies. Asking people to conserve oil has nothing to do with "control" and everything to do with common sense.

The reason oil prices are rising is that it keeps getting scarcer and harder to obtain. It's a finite resource, if you still don't get that. Modernization in China has added a jolt to an already non-sustainable situation. People keep talking about prices when they should actually be talking about global reserves. Alaska's ANWR may give us about 500 day's worth; barely worth mentioning in the long term, but heralded as some great solution by all the know-nothings in this country.

SUVs alone are not to blame for the oil situation but they add significant unnecessary waste. Oil is controlled by private companies but it's a public resource. People taking more than their share because they want to drive "what they want" are as guilty as any thief of water or land.

And, no matter what you drive, slowing down will save fuel for everyone.
