Harry Bloomfield presented the following explanation :
As I have nothing to report, I'll relate an incident I saw about this time last year....
I was in L2 of the M1 south on the approach to the Chesterfield turn off (J30?), middle of the day and a long almost continuous lineup of HGV's in L1. Just looking for a decent gap, in readiness for the exit.
Suddenly the artic on my left bounced across four feet, then back again with the trailer wheels lifting well up from the road and traailer over to close to 45deg. I thought he was going over onto his side in L2, so I released some smoke from my tyres to give him room to fall into. Then the HGV in front of him did the same, but not nearly so dramatically.
Out from between the 2nd and 3rd heavy popped the cause of the problem, a silver 306 with a couple young ladies in the front displaying a rather embarbutted look on their faces.
My guess was that they had been on the hard shoulder, trying to find a way back onto the motorway and the HGV's evasive tactics were the results of the driver of the 306's misjudgements of trying to fit in the gaps.
The driver of the first artic deserves a medal for his skill and control of that trailer.
