If there were a likely, or probably, in there somewhere, that comment might have some merit, but to suggest that, regardless of road or tyre conditions, aquaplaning cannot ocurr below 50 mph, is just plain nonsense. No way am I going to accept there is any evidence to support that idea.

What you, or maybe your son is saying in effect, is that there is no chance that the wheels of car with wide bald tyres, travelling on a smooth road with heavy surface water, will aquaplane as long as it doesn't exceed 50 mph. At 51 mph it might but at 49-50 mph it will not. Rubbish!

and cannot be provoked at the "far lower

You're taking my comment out of context. I said "In general, a wide tyre, will aquaplane at far lower speeds than a narrow tyre with an equal depth of tread"

Meaning a skinny tyre could still be in contact with the road at speeds well in excess of 50 mph. There can be a considerable difference between the speed it can travel at without aquaplaning, compared to say a car like mine, with it's 10" wide tyres. Mike.

At very low speeds I've no doubt he is right, but I still believe there is grey area at higher speeds, where it's impossible to mathematically prove either way. Mike.
