What was interesting was the atbreastude of many other drivers after I got my first BMW - not new, but...

Well I must admit that whilst I can readily agree with Ray about certain aspects of driving, we're poles apart on quite a few things, because I frequently depart from what the textbook says, and he, apparently, will not.

This past couple of days for example, Eileen and I did a trip from Whitby to Portpatrick, had an overnight stop there, and came home via Grasmere, a round trip of 540 miles. The weather was disappointing, being wet for most of the time, but we covered a good deal of the NSL sections at speed limit plus 20-30%, exceeded 100 mph for short distances on at least three occasions, crossed continuous white lines a few times when straightening bends out, did a considerable amount of single handed steering when in the lower speed ranges, frequently changed gear while negotiating roundabouts etc. - and all without a hint of trouble of any kind. As measured by Ray (for example) and the other textbook enthusiasts, this was a horrendous performance - full of mistakes - and yet it was all easy, natural, peaceful progress, and apart from me getting tailgated a couple of times, there was not a moment of discomfort with any other road user.

..so what the hell is it all about?

Oh by the way, the old Pug. 406 yielded just over 50 mpg for the whole trip. :-)

Best wishes all, Dave.
