Sloth driver almost dies
I am driving North bound on one of the many two lane state roads in Illinois. A group of cars in front of me is going 5 under the speed limit (55MPH). I pull within...

Not all trades are wholesaled or auctioned. Dealers like to keep the nice ones and sell them themselves. Which is why it's usually better to sell your car to a dealer of that make. As an exampple, if you take your nicely-kept Lexus to a Chevy dealer, he's definitely going to wholesale it out the moment you drive the new car off the lot, since a Lexus "doesn't fit" with his regular inventory. Since the dealer knows he's only going to get wholesale for the car, he's going to offer you even less so he can still make a profit.

OTOH, take that same car to a Lexus dealer, and the dealer will see a car that he can sell directly (for much more than wholesale), so he might give you a little bit more money.

What you SHOULD do is shop the car to multiple used-car dealers - especially a CarMax if you have one nearby. Collect bids from 3 or 4 places and then let your new car dealer make you his best offer on your trade. If his bid is too low, you can confidently hold out for more knowing that you have another buyer lined up who will pay a higher price. Worst case you can take the car back to your high bidder and sell it there.
