Rover SparesCough. And just what government brought this in? Can't see a Tory government giving this...
Well written Carl!
Here's an example of the mutterings of freaks who support Transport 2000 (pasted from their site's forum)
" With regard to reducing casualties on our roads, the nationwide increase in speed samera sites is fantastic and has saved many lives. I still think there`s more that can be done though!
I don`t tend to see so many traffic police on the roads as I used to. In fact, looking into it, it seems that numbers have dropped by 65 per cent in the last six years! Is this true? I`d like to know as my somewhat unenlightened younger brother has a blue sports car (I think it`s a Porshe) and is always going on about speed cameras and how unjust they are, etc, etc.
It`s difficult though. If I were a policeman with a limited budget, I`d rather have some cameras (that pay for themselves from speeding motorists) than have uniformed officers on traffic duties. And this is a good thing as we now have many more people paying a lot more attention to their speedometers.
If a third of all road rests are caused through speed though, then presumably the other two-thirds of rests are caused by people who won`t be caught on a speed camera (ie drink-driving, poorly maintained-stolen cars, etc).
Our focus on speed has cut rests but has it meant less traffic police? Sean P "
